From the President
So much has been happening over the last few weeks! I want to start by thanking June and members of the Youth Committee for a wonderful meeting featuring members of the Interact Club of Kenmore State School joining us along with their parents and honoured guests. It is exciting to see that the Interact Club is creating impact. Their collective energy, commitment and enthusiasm is truly infectious! If any members are interested in coming out to support the Interact Club on a more regular basis, talk with June!
 
Following on from that exciting meeting, we had our first joint event with the Interact Club organising and managing a BBQ for Ripples of Change Uganda – a charity supported by the Interact Club. It was a fun and successful day for Ripples of Change Uganda. A big thank you to Ken, Ian, Colin, Margaret, June and our exchange student Marketa for their efforts.
 
I trust that nearly every member has had an opportunity to interact with our international exchange student Marketa. I continue to encourage you to think about how you might host Marketa for dinner or some outing. Further, please consider if you can host Marketa during her stay – we are still in need for host families for the month of January and April to June. Please speak with June or me if you would like to know more about what is entailed to be a host family.
 
Finally, our meeting next week will be Club Committees, featuring a presentation from the Youth Committee presenting their work to date. The rest of the time is allocated to continuing the work well underway by us all. Looking forward to seeing you there!

 Ross Thomas celebrates a birthday this month. Happy Birthday Ross!

President Jason welcomed KSHS Interact Club students of which there were many as well as Club Sponsors - Joe Appleton and Lisa Jarold from Kenmore Village Management, Cr. Greg Adermann and Dale Hannan from National Collection Service

Member Announcements:

Greg Adermann discussed the dedication of a special park bench in Rafting Ground Reserve in memory of Alison Baden Clay on Wednesday September 9 at 10:00am. All welcome to attend. See notice below.

Jenn Underhill mentioned an excusion to the Pink Door, Womens Crisis Support Centre at Racewiew, Ipswich on September 22 for those that are interested.

June then introduced the KSHS Interact Club presentation. Interact gives young people the opportunity to develop leadership skills while making a genuine difference in their local and international communities. The Club meets every fortnight, Currently 19 students are members supported by our members Jenn, Dave, Helen and June. Presentations followed from members of the Club which appear below.

A presentation and video followed from Carly Nzvimbo KSHS Support Teacher for the Interact Club on a Project called “Ripples of Change, Uganda Rainwater Tanks” proving access to clean water. The tanks cost $5k each to construct and her group has build 5 so far and raised funds for an extra 6. Very impressive presentation.

Jason then presented the Interact Club with a Rotary Certificate of Organisation which signifies they are now a formally recognised Interact club.

Jason went on to present Certificates of Appreciation for support given to the Interact Club  BCC - Greg Adermann, Kenmore Village Management - Lisa Jarold  and Joe Appleton and Kidfs4Kids High School.

Certificates of Appreciation were also presented to National Collection Service - Dale Hannan and Cr. Greg Adermann for sponsoring the Solar Buddies program,

Ross then talked about Solar Buddies, started as a Project of this club by retired member Brian Becconsall about 1o years ago. Working with around 6 local primary schools we have contributed 10,000 lights to remote communities in PNG, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. Interact President

I’m the president of the school’s Interact Club. I found out about the club at the beginning of last year, and joined as soon as I could, so I’ve been a part of this for just over a  year and a half now. The club has provided me amazing opportunities for myself to grow as a person, in ways I didn’t expect it would. Giving back to the community has always been important to me, but it’s felt significantly more achievable now that this club has given me ways to do so.

Interact Secretary

I joined our club at the beginning of last year and have since been involved in a range of opportunities I am glad to have been offered.

 One of the charities that we, as a club, currently support is Paws for Hope and Understanding.

Paws for Hope and Understanding is a Queensland charity dedicated to providing trained service dogs to ex-defence and emergency services personnel, particularly veteran and first responders, who are navigating mental health struggles. At Kenmore High’s Interact Club, we are passionate about this cause and have worked hard to support it with our initiatives.

Our Interact Club has supported many great causes, and most of our inspiration from these comes from the Interact Conference. In this event that happened earlier this year on the 9th of May, we got to hear from many different charities and groups, that raised awareness for their cause and encouraged us to support them. This was a very educational experience and helped us to shortlist some charities and businesses that our club would want to support.

I am in year 7 at KSHS. I have been in the interact club for 7 months now. I joined because I wanted to help people and there are a lot of people who need it.

Did you know that 1 in 8 people In Australia live in poverty and many kids don’t have access to proper stationary in school. Our Interact Club supported the Kids4Kids charity. The Kids4Kids mission is “To give an opportunity for disadvantaged children to reach and expand their potential by providing school supplies, resources and programs that can help them prepare to become productive, responsible, ethical, creative and compassionate members of society.”

Club Excursion 22nd September  - The Pink Door

The Projects Committee would like to invite all members for a club excursion to Pink Door in Raceview on Tuesday, 22 September at 10:00am. 

The Womens Crisis Support Centre (WCSSI) has been supported by Rotary Club of Kenmore for many years. Home - Women's Crisis Support Service Inc.

The Pink Door initiative was born out of WCSSI (Womens Crisis Support Centre), and their work with community. It is a direct response to the growing needs of the community, specifically for women who are considered at risk, isolated and have limited social support. Their work includes supplying clothing, household items, and practical assistance to help people rebuild stability and confidence during difficult times.

The visit will give us an opportunity to learn more about their impact, see their operations firsthand, and explore ways our club may be able to support their project.

Club Projects

Christmas Raffle - Our Major Fundraiser

Planning is underway for the Christmas Raffle that will run over the weekends from November 6 to December 6. The Sign On Roster will be posted on ClubRunner in the next few weeks. Shifts are of 3 hours but we can work with shorter times. Every member should start thinking about their commitment to this major Project. It's success depends on everyone getting involved.
