From the President

My Fellow Rotarians

Hope the slowly increasing day-time temperatures are encourag-ing you all to travel and enjoy the weather. If you didn’t attend the meeting on the 20th, you missed Ross’s travel stories. Fellowship was on our agenda, and we did two activities that were engaging.

I am hoping that the activity that focused on saying just two good things about another person (albeit was reluctantly completed by some) brought happiness to many of you. The research shows that saying nice things to others can have positive effects on both yourself and others. Expressing praise and gratitude is particular-ly important for keeping up mo-rale and to make people feel val-ued. Being nice to others can spread kindness and positivity, which can make the world a bet-ter place. Isn’t that what we want as Rotarians? The world to be a better place?

The next activity was a brain-storming session and I am hoping that the outcomes of that activity will help the future presidents in their planning.

This is my final column as the president. See you on the 1st July.

Leaving you all with one thought from Bhagwat Geeta “We are kept from our goals not by obsta-cles, but by a clear path to lesser goals”. So “IMAGINE ROTARY”.

Last Meeting

Chairperson : Sanjoti Parekh

Reporter: Dave Patmore

President Sanjoti opened the meeting and welcomed all Rotar-ians to her last meeting as Presi-dent.

Spots:

Ross Thomas

Ross regaled tales of his recent trip to the northern climes of Alaska. After landing in Vancouver he and Sue high-tailed it to the sin city of Las Vegas. They spent 5 days wandering in and out of casinos along the 4.2 mile (6.75 km) Las Vegas Strip. Sue enjoyed seeing the forever young rocker, Sir Rod Stewart. A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon which Ross said should be on everyone’s bucket list. Then northwards beckoned and they boarded the Holland America up the Inside Passage, past glaciers, onto Anchorage, Alaska. A week was spent on terra firma with highlights including a scenic train ride through snow-capped mountains, a visit to Denali National Park and fun dog-sledding. All in all, a fantastic trip although Ross may have to go back into the workforce to pay for all of the tipping he was required to do. Welcome back Ross and Sue!!

Ross also said the final Solar Bud-dies for the year will be held at Chapel Hill State School on Thurs-day 22 June. As there will be over 120 students participating Ross would like assistance from another 2 Rotarians on the day commenc-ing at 8.30am.

Urvi discussed her recent trip to PNG where she was lucky enough o meet the current Indian PM, Mr Narendra Modi. She said this was very impactful as she has great

respect for the Indian leader. She hen had a fun trip with friends

going tenpin bowling and taking ver the local nightclub with some Bollywood inspired disco danc- ng!

Ricky Haberfield

Ricky said that Community Pantry s about to start at Kenmore Vil- age. The 3 charities being sup-

ported this year are Anglicare, Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul (Our Lady of the Rosary

Conference) serving the Chapel Hill, Kenmore and the Moggill area. All three charities are now all locally based.

Ricky also said that Kenmore Vil- age have called for help from Ro- arians to help guide people hrough the Village while upcom- ng works are conducted. Ricky will send an email out to members with more details.

Patrick Cook

Patrick said that E-Waste Connec- ion is still functioning and will be running a Garage Sale in conjunc- ion with Men’s Shed on Saturday 5 July. Leading up to garage

sale E-Waste will be asking for assistance from 2-4 Rotarians to help with a cleanup of the site on Friday 30 June. On Saturday 1 July help will be required with sorting of e-waste. On Friday 14

July they will also need help with setup prior to the Garage Sale to be held the following day.

Dave Patmore

Dave informed members that the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program was running at Kenmore State High School on Tuesday 1 August. The school is seeking the assistance of 9 Rotari-ans to assist on the day from 8.45am to 3pm. However if Rotar-ians can only do half a day that is completely fine. Dave will send an email to members asking them to help out with this important ini-tiative that Kenmore Rotary has been involved with over a decade.

Members then enjoyed some fel-lowship over dinner.

Fun Times:

Sanjoti then ran 2 club exercises/games. The first game was called “Be Nice” where member names were drawn from a hat and mem-bers had to say at least 2 nice things about their chosen member. It became very apparent that Kenmore Rotary is full of high class, high quality people.

The second exercise was called “What If?” where each table was asked “If your group gets a $10K donation towards creating a future sustainable Rotary project that generates $50K income per year for the club in the next 2 years, what would it be?”. Some of the suggestions included:

Funding an annual signature func-tion event for a special cause that targets philanthropic individuals in the Kenmore region and beyond;

Setup an online site that attracts enough traffic to have paid adver-tising (i.e. Income source);

Move the trailer raffle to an online format (like the Mater Lottery).

When I had my first vote —-And had
to run the election as well !

In 1972 I was a young principal of a tiny school in an isolated community in North West Queensland. It was a year for a State Election and, being the
school principal and the school being the venue for a polling place, it fell to
me to conduct the voting for my small community.
Now it’s important to point out that in those days one had to be 21 years of age to be eligible to vote. I was just 21 at the time and had never before been in a polling booth let alone know what went on there.
All the electoral materials including a solid metal ballot box were sent down
from the rail head by local carrier. The school room was cleared of desks and children ready for election day. Being a state election I didn’t have the luxury of an assisting poll clerk so it was just me for the whole day.
Absentee votes and section votes were a nightmare, but my biggest fright
happened when a tourist bus with voters from all over Australia arrived in the town. Fortunately, my mate the Postmaster convinced the driver it would be better to take his passengers to a bigger polling booth in Cloncurry. Later that year we had a Federal Election and that’s another story.
