President's Message

Can you believe that we are now entering the final month of the 2024-2025 Rotary year?!  It has been a busy time for the Club and I want to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic weekend we just had at the Brookfield Show.  Our club’s presence was truly felt throughout the event, thanks to a strong and dedicated team effort from everyone involved.  It was inspiring to see members come together, share responsibilities, and demonstrate Rotary’s commitment to community service and connection.

A special, heartfelt thank you goes out to Pat, whose outstanding coordination ensured our involvement ran smoothly from start to finish.  Pat’s dedication, attention to detail, and enthusiasm were vital to our success and he is truly an exemplar Rotarian and great human being.  I also want to recognise Jim for expertly managing the roster through Club Runner.  These contributions highlight how important teamwork and good planning are to the success of our events.

Looking ahead, we have another exciting opportunity coming up.  The Opera in the Garden is being held on Sunday 1 June.  This promises to be a delightful afternoon filled with beautiful music, community spirit, and fellowship.  We are still looking for a few more volunteers to assist with event setup and general support throughout the day.  Volunteering at events like this is not only rewarding but also a great way to connect with fellow Rotarians and members of our community.  If you can help, please reach out to Mary Kearney as soon as possible.  Your participation will make a big difference in creating an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

Finally, I’m very much looking forward to our next club meeting, where we will be privileged to hear from Dr Amanda  Salmon from the University of Queensland.  She will share fascinating insights on the innovative use of assistance dogs in aged care settings which is a topic that reflects Rotary’s commitment to improving lives in diverse and meaningful ways.  And given we have our very own assistance dog, Shadow, as our newest member of the Club, the presentation will be very relevant.  The positive impact therapy animals have on the wellbeing of members of our community is truly inspiring, and I encourage all members to attend and engage with this important discussion.

Yours in service,

Dave Patmore
President

CLUB MEETING HELD 20th MAY

at ONE TABLE CAFE

Chair : Ruthven Underhill

Reporter :   Mary Kearney

President’s comments: Dave thanked Hayley on behalf of the club for the great job she’s doing with club catering

  • Dave inducted our newest member Shadow, who gratefully accepted a treat and a member badge
  • Dave commented that at the District Conference he noted that Wynnum and Manly members hold regular coffee mornings where they all wear their purple DV shirts – we could possibly do this perhaps one Friday a month in various coffee shops, to raise awareness of the club and work we do against domestic violence

Guest – Christine Young from Moggill CWA spoke about the proposed ā€œsconversationā€ and yarnbombing display near the Guide Hut in Booker Place at Bellbowrie from 7th to 14th August. They are inviting participation (perhaps decorating one tree or bollard) from a range of community groups. This is based on the Jumpers and Jazz festival in Warwick.

Patrick gave details for the Brookfield Show.

June advised that the final day for the KSHS Leadership Programme was Wednesday 21st May.

Mary noted that Opera in the Gardens was coming up on 1st June.

Martin advised that Rotary’s involvement in the Challenge DV bbq on 30th May has been cancelled (huge sigh of relief!). Mary thanked the club members who had volunteered to assist with this.

The club members’ slides were shown, with a mix of great photos, information about a range of places, and lots of laughs.

Leanne and Brian – Alaska

Jason – Japan (mainly Tokyo and Disney)

Andrea and Luis – Denmark, Austria and  Italy

Urvi – wedding celebrations in India
