24th October is World Polio Day. Polio is a virus and can affect the central nervous system and may cause paralysis. There are 2 types of vaccines – inactivated and the oral polio vaccine. Rotary’s first polio project was in the Philippines in 1979. At that time, there were over 1000 cases per day in 125 countries. Polio Plus began in 1985. Now polio is 99.9% eradicated. The last remaining countries are Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation currently match Rotary donations 2 for 1.
